aneroid barometer [Greek: ‘not wet’] A barometer that does not use a liquid, i.e. without a mercury column. A corrugated metal capsule is partially evacuated of air, and prevented from collapsing by an internal spring. Changes in air pressure cause alterations in the distance between the two faces of the capsule, which may be amplified to give a pressure reading.
