The AQR study was developed in 1991 as an objective method for assessing airline quality. It is conducted jointly by Dr. Dean Headley, professor at Wichita State University and Dr. Brent Bowen, professor at Purdue University. AirTran Airways ranked first overall in 2008 and has been the number one low-cost carrier for four consecutive years. The AQR reports that AirTran Airways maintained its industry leading mishandled baggage rate, dropping to an industry best 1.63 per 1,000 passengers in 2010 (from 1.67 per 1,000 passengers in 2009). The Airline Quality Rating 2011 reflects monthly scores for the calendar year 2010 and is based on four major areas: on-time performance, denied boardings, mishandled baggage and customer complaints. The airline has enjoyed several accolades in the past year in addition to the AQR, including being named top airline in The Wall Street Journal's annual airline scorecard, receiving the Market Leadership Award from leading industry publication Air Transport World and being selected best value airline by SmarterTravel. American Airlines Airlines see pros, cons to shared airport space. U.S. airports increasingly are following Europe's lead in maintaining common-use gates and ticket counters that are shared by multiple airlines. Airports like the arrangement because it allows them to juggle space according to flight volume and free up square footage for retail outlets that bring in much-needed rents. Airlines, too, can save on rents when sharing space on an as-needed basis, but some point out that money is not the only issue. "At our large hubs, it just makes sense to be in the same gates and counters where we're in, day-in, day-out," says a spokesman for American Airlines, adding that permanent facilities also have a "significant branding" advantage. McCarran International Airport There has been a power outage at McCarran International Airport causing the entire airport to operate in "pitch-blackness." At about 1:30 am on Tuesday, April 5, 2011, Las Vegas' international airport operations came to an abrupt halt when the entire airport lost electricity. Sources tell eTN that planes are currently stuck on the tarmac, with some planes which are as close as a few inches to their respective jetbridges unable to move. Las Vegas airport spokesperson Michael Alanza told eTN that Nevada Electric is on the way. It is unclear what has caused the power outage. Back-up generators did not come on in the terminal building. A terror attack is not yet out of the question. Planes are not allowed to approach the gates at this time. Apr 4, 2011
McCarran International Airport, Spirit Airlines If it wasnOt bad enough that Spirit Airlines flight 124 from Chicago OOHare International to Las VegasO McCarran International was delayed an hour then was held waiting at the tarmac in Las Vegas because Oanother plane was using our gate,O the power system at Las VegasO international airport failed completely just short of few inches before the plane reached the jet-bridge. The flightOs head flight attendant, who refused to be named in this story, announced the power outage immediately, but not before she could inject a little humor in the incident. OWho knows we could he here for days,O she said. Her remark elicited a few laughs from the already-exhausted passengers. That humor quickly turned into agitation as passengers had already endured a delay in Chicago then another delay after landing in Las Vegas, because, as the flight captain remarked, Oanother airplane is using our gate.O From the vantage point of being on the Spirit Airlines aircraft, the airport was completely black. It seemed like the airport had no contingency plan for such a situation, because no emergency lights came on, and it was clear that the airport was operating in the dark. It was later confirmed by McCarran International spokesperson Michael Alanza that they had no idea why the back-up generators did not turn on and did not rule out the possibility of a terror attack. Approximately 50 minutes after the power outage, emergency power came on and passengers were allowed to disembark. Upon arrival at the gate, I asked a TSA agent if the entire airport had been pitch-black the entire time. Her answer was an alarming, OYes.O Apr 4, 2011

San Francisco International Airport Mayor Lee Celebrates SFO Terminal 2 Grand Opening. Mayor Edwin M. Lee today unveiled the state-of-the-art Terminal 2 (T2) at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Turner Construction and Gensler renovated the 1954 terminal in a design-build partnership for $383 million, recycling 90% of the original building content, and created nearly 2,700 jobs. Registered with the United States Green Building Council, the terminal aims to be the first LEED Gold-certified terminal in the United States. The 640,000-square-foot terminal is the new home for American Airlines and Virgin America, which [ETH] with the arrival of American Airline's Susan G. Komen Special Edition 757 and vintage DC-3 as well as Virgin America's new Airbus A320 and Virgin Galactic's WhiteKnightTwo/SpaceShipTwo space launch system [ETH] provided visitors today with a first-hand glance at the past, present and future of commercial aviation. The first T2 flights will commence on Thursday, April 14. The community is invited to a free Open House on Saturday, April 9. "As we witness today the opening of a new generation of airport terminals, we are reminded once again of San Francisco's global reputation as an innovator and leader," said Mayor Lee. "The completion of T2 is a game changer on many levels. Not only is it a uniquely sustainable and world class terminal, but this project brought green jobs to the region and will keep permanent jobs when we need them most, boosting our local and regional economy." "Today, as San Francisco unveils the most innovative, environmentally sustainable domestic airport in the country, Terminal 2 marks California's active role as a transportation hub that connects air travelers with modern comforts," said Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom. "T2 is an economic engine that has created and will continue to create jobs and bolster our State's economy while being a responsible environmental steward of our natural resources." Originally constructed in 1954 and renovated in 1984, the 640,000 square foot Terminal 2 housed SFO's international flights until 2000, when it was replaced by the new International Terminal. The design of T2 is a notable departure from traditional airport terminals [ETH] most of which were built decades ago. T2 is customized for today and tomorrow's modern travelers with features designed to elevate the travel experience and to shatter perceptions and limitations of what the public has come to expect from air travel. This was made possible thanks to a strong design-build partnership between Turner Construction and Gensler. "SFO has created the finest traveler experience in an earth-friendly package," said SFO Director John L. Martin. "T2 is modern, restful, and intuitive. It demonstrates how we can simultaneously achieve sustainability and enhance the traveler experience." "Going green at SFO is an important journey for the nearly 40 million people who fly through the airport annually," said U.S. EPA's Pacific Southwest Regional Administrator Jared Blumenfeld. "Each passenger will learn how green buildings save energy, water, building materials and money. This is the future of airports." "Our design for T2 puts passengers first," said Gensler Founder Arthur Gensler. "We want people to enjoy the time that they spend at the airport and be delighted by unexpected experiences." Sustainable Features at T2 T2 is the first airport terminal in the United States that is LEED Gold-registered. The terminal was built with multiple progressive sustainable features aimed at reducing carbon emissions while also creating a more healthful environment for travelers and staff. These features include: Natural Light [ETH] Skylights bring daylight into the ticketing lobby and retail areas, providing a healthier work environment, while significantly reducing electricity requirements during daylight hours. Cleaner Air [ETH] An innovative displacement ventilation system that uses filtered air to improve indoor air quality, while using 20 percent less energy. Car-Free Connection [ETH] T2 connects to BART via SFO's AirTrain people mover system, so that travelers and employees alike can easily go from airport to city on mass transit. Zero-Waste [ETH] Waste stations replace traditional garbage cans with easy-to-use compartments for composting, recyclables and trash. Locally Grown [ETH] Local, organic food vendors, offering wholesome food grown and prepared in a healthful manner. Water Conservation [ETH] A dual plumbing system that allows for reclaimed water from SFO's water treatment facility to be used for toilets and other uses throughout the airport. Moreover, T2's plumbing fixtures use 40 percent less water than typical fixtures. Paperless Ticketing [ETH] A paperless ticketing system throughout the terminal increases efficiency and saves trees. Energy Efficiency [ETH] Energy efficient lighting and machinery will drastically reduce energy use. Sustainable Building Materials [ETH] Sustainable building materials include terrazzo flooring with recycled glass chips, recycled-content carpet and innovative and efficient use of structural steel. American's Admirals Club was also built with sustainability in mind. Various techniques were employed to maintain a high level of sustainability, such as water-use reduction, optimizing energy performance and construction waste management.
Key Design Features of T2 Relax After Security [ETH] A unique "Recompose" area past the security screening area that allows passengers a quiet and unhurried place to re-assemble their clothing and carry-on items. The Recompose also features a striking original ceiling installation by world-renowned artist Janet Echelman. Dining & Shopping Marketplace [ETH] Inspired by San Francisco's historic Ferry Building, T2 offers a beautiful food marketplace and retail street featuring the best of the Bay Area's retailers and restaurants focusing on locally-sourced, organic offerings. Computer Connections [ETH] Work-oriented counter seating with outlets and free wifi. Club-like lounge seating [ETH] Lounge in comfortable and stylish "Egg" chairs and seating designed by Fritz Hansen. Hydration Stations [ETH] Special tap-water hydration stations for filling re-usable water bottles. Places for Kids [ETH] Two unique children's play areas with original artwork that doubles as play pieces by Bay Area artists Walter Kitundu and Charles Sowers. American Airlines Admirals Club [ETH] Before, between or after flights, AA's brand-new, LEED Silver-registered Admirals Club [ETH] the only airport lounge in the terminal [ETH] provides a quiet place to relax or work in comfort and style. "Turner is very proud to have delivered on the promise of building toward LEED Gold specifications on schedule and under budget," said Turner Construction Senior Vice President Michael O'Brien. "T2 is the nation's first terminal renovation built to LEED Gold specifications. The original goal was LEED Silver, but the project team worked very hard to exceed that. We managed to recycle 93 percent of our construction waste, diverting more than 18,500 tons from our landfills." Airlines at T2 T2 will be home to American Airlines and Virgin America. American Airlines first flew out of SFO's original T2 building in 1954 and utilized one of the first jet bridge prototypes. Virgin America, launched in 2007, is San Francisco's only home-based airline, and T2 will serve as the airline's principal base of operations. Each airline will occupy seven of the 14 gates at T2. American also provides customers with T2's only airline lounge [ETH] a new, environmentally friendly Admirals Club expected to receive LEED Silver-certification. At more than 9,400 square feet [ETH] almost double the size of its previous lounge in T3 [ETH] American's new Admirals Club features comfortable seating for up to 165 guests, a business center with HP PCs, Wi-Fi, a walk-up cyber cafe with HP TouchSmart PCs, a TV lounge with flat-panel TVs, private spa-like showers and architecture reflecting the unique character of Northern California. "American Airlines is among the longest-serving airlines in the San Francisco Bay Area, so we are looking forward to opening a new era of service out of an innovatively designed terminal that we know our customers will enjoy," said Tim Ahern, American's Vice President [ETH] Airport Services. "Now [ETH] more than six decades after American first began operating from the original Terminal 2 [ETH] the new T2, along with our new Admirals Club, will be ideal for our operations and will provide our customers with a great travel experience. The terminal also makes it convenient to fly on our oneworld Alliance partners that provide nonstop service to several international cities." Known for its sustainable practices and inventive design, Virgin America informed the T2 design concept process and it is anticipated that Virgin America's spaces within T2 will ultimately achieve the highest possible LEED-Platinum certification. Virgin America is the only California-based airline. With outstanding service, custom-designed cabins and high-tech amenities, Virgin America has been winning over consumers and travel awards since its August 2007 launch [ETH] including capturing the "Best Domestic Airline" title in Conde Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards and Travel + Leisure's World's Best Awards for the past three years. Virgin America has created 1,900 jobs and welcomed more than 11 million guests since its launch. The airline continues to fuel significant expansion, with its employee base projected to grow by 500 additional teammates a year and its fleet projected to triple in size by 2019. "Virgin is known around the world for product innovation that improves the customer experience. I am proud to see Virgin America grow into a new home that allows them to extend that unique Virgin experience from the aircraft to the airport," said Virgin Group Founder Sir Richard Branson. "Thanks to the vision of SFO and Gensler, T2 is a leader in sustainable airport design and the evolution of the airport guest experience. Just as Virgin America now has guests who say 'I wish my flight was longer,' T2 is a place travelers will actually enjoy visiting and spending time in." "As a new carrier and as the only California-based airline, we've had an opportunity to build sustainable practices into our operations from day one," said Virgin America CEO and President David Cush. "We've also utilized the latest in design to enhance the traveler experience [ETH] and we hope, elevate the journey beyond just getting from Point A to Point B. As we grow, we're proud to partner with SFO and the City to create a new home that embodies these same principles [ETH] and in a very real sense the innovative, environmentally-focused spirit of the Bay Area. T2 will not only elevate the travel experience, it will serve as a model for sustainable airport design around the world." Art at T2 The traveler's experience will be further augmented by SFO's world-renowned signature public art program featuring dozens of art works by local and international artists. The five permanent new public art works commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission for T2 include: Norie Sato's Air Over Under; Kendall Buster's Topography; and Janet Echelman's Every Beating Second. Exploratorium artists Charles Sowers and Walter Kintundu have developed art-as-play areas for children, featuring Charles Sowers' Butterfly Wall; and Walter Kintundu's Bay Area Bird Encounters. In addition, a new special exhibit presented by the SFO Museum, A Century of Silver and Metalwork from the Margo Grant Walsh Collection will be on display through October 2, 2011. "The five new commissions are as bold and exciting as the surrounding architecture. In addition to the new art, we've reinstalled 20 artworks, which were historically in the airport's collection, by some of the best artistic talent to emerge from the Bay Area from the early 1960s through the mid-1980s," said Luis R. Cancel, director of cultural affairs for the San Francisco Arts Commission. "World-class art is a part of the fabric of everyday life in San Francisco, and what better way to set the stage for our visitors than with a museum-quality art collection at our gateway." Southwest Airlines, Boeing No word from Southwest on repair status of damaged plane. Boeing engineers are working with Southwest Airlines mechanics to repair the damaged fuselage of a grounded 737 in Yuma, Ariz., but Southwest isn't saying when or if the plane will return to service. A portion of the fuselage has been cut away and sent to the National Transportation Safety Board for analysis, and Southwest has completed safety inspections on dozens of other jets. Apr 7, 2011
Southwest Airlines, Boeing Southwest cancels more flights amid inspections. Southwest Airlines canceled 70 flights on Monday as it continued to inspect Boeing 737 planes following the emergency landing on Friday of a jet with a hole in its fuselage. Spokeswoman Whitney Eichinger said 70 flights systemwide were canceled for Monday out of about 3,400 daily flights. Of 79 Boeing older 737-300 model planes that were designated for additional inspections after the April 1 incident, 33 had been returned to service, she said. The discount airline canceled 600 flights over the weekend as it checked 737-300 planes for fuselage cracks and fatigue after one of its planes with a gaping hole made an emergency landing in Arizona. Flight 812 was heading from Phoenix to Sacramento when a 5-foot tear opened in the fuselage 20 minutes after takeoff. So far, inspections have turned up cracks in two other planes, Southwest said. Boeing was expected to issue a service bulletin to operators of 737-300s worldwide on inspection procedures for the subset of planes affected, especially those with particularly heavy use, aviation officials said. Boeing did not have an immediate comment on Monday. The narrow body 737 is Boeing's best selling model. There are about 280 737-300s currently in the U.S. airline fleet, and 900 globally. James Higgins, an analyst with Soleil Securities, said the flight cancellations will cause some revenue loss for Southwest but he doesn't expect lasting fallout from this incident. Southwest expects to close its pending acquisition of AirTran Holdings in the second quarter. "I don't think there is anything systematic or persistent here," Higgins said. "This is more noteworthy for its headline generation than for its likely damage to the company." Shares of Southwest, which only operates Boeing 737 planes, were down 2.6 percent, or 33 cents, at $12.34 in morning trading on Monday, while Boeing was off 17 cents, or 0.2 percent, at $73.84. The Arca Airline index was down 0.9 percent. Apr 4, 2011

TSA Clown opens confetti-filled egg on TSA agent's head, faces charges. A woman who opened a plastic egg filled with confetti over an airport security agent's head in Philadelphia now faces a misdemeanor harassment charge. Val Baul is a traveling clown known as the "Bunny Lady" in Roeland Park, Kan., where she resides. She claims the TSA agent confronted her about her plastic eggs after she had already passed through security. Apr 8, 2011
TSA TSA aims to hire 200 more agents for Atlanta airport. The Transportation Security Administration plans to hire an additional 200 part-time workers ahead of the opening of the airport's new international terminal next year. More security officers are needed to screen travelers at the terminal, which will become a second entry to the airport's concourses. The TSA currently employs about 1,000 officers in Atlanta. Apr 6, 2011
TSA TSA will expand expedited screening for airline crews. The Transportation Security Administration plans to expand a test program that may eventually allow pilots and flight attendants to bypass traditional airport security checkpoints. Tom Hendricks -- ATA Senior Vice President-Safety Security and Operations -- said the program will "satisfy security needs and free up TSA resources to improve passenger flow." The expedited process has been tested at three airports so far and will be expanded to "a limited number" of airports. It was developed by a union representing airline pilots. Unions representing flight attendants also support the expedited screening. The program relies on verifying crewmembers' identities and employment status. Apr 5, 2011
TSA TSA puts on a friendlier -- and furrier -- face. A TSA program in Texas trains Labrador Retrievers as airport security dogs because of travelers' high comfort level with the affable breed. "[W]e think these dogs are a little more comfortable for the traveling public than some of the dogs we might associate with being police dogs," says Scott Thomas of TSA's Canine Breeding and Development Center puppy program. TSA Study raises concerns about proper use of scanners. A recent study from the University of California at San Francisco suggests that radiation emitted from airport scanners could boost the risk of cancer if the machines are not used properly. "We don't know the doses of radiation they would emit or how they would malfunction," said Dr. Rebecca Smith-Bindman, who conducted the study. "We're assuming they work as intended, but I fully believe [the Transportation Security Administration] should be prudent and allow more independent testing." Apr 4, 2011
TSA Lack of female screeners complicates work for TSA employees. A diverse workforce made up of men and women is an "absolute necessity" for the Transportation Security Administration, according to an editorial in The Washington Post. The editorial notes that a shortage of female screeners at Washington Dulles International Airport will force the TSA to transfer female screeners from baggage inspections to security checkpoints. Meanwhile, other observers say forcing female employees to move from baggage screening to the passenger line could limit their options for career advancement and complicate their schedules. United Airlines A United Airlines jet that left Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans Monday morning was forced to turn around and make an emergency landing minutes after takeoff when smoke was reported in the cockpit. The pilots of a United Airlines flight that lost power in all its instruments today were able to return to the airport and land safely, guided by air traffic controllers, cockpit tapes show. The potential disaster occurred just three days after pilots of a Southwest Airlines jet were able to get the plane safely on the ground even though a section of the top of the fuselage ripped off in mid-flight. Apr 5, 2011
United Airlines, Airbus United flight lands safely after losing instruments. Passengers on United Airlines Flight 497 praised their pilots and air traffic controllers after the Airbus A320 lost power and had to be guided to an emergency landing in New Orleans relying on instructions radioed from the ground. Pilots reported "a smoke issue" shortly after takeoff, followed by an instrument failure. The plane's nose veered off the runway upon landing, but passengers and crew evacuated safely and there were no serious injuries. The FAA said it was investigating the incident. Apr 5, 2011
United Continental Holdings, All Nippon Airways ANA, United Continental begin trans-Pacific alliance. United Continental Holdings has launched its trans-Pacific joint venture with All Nippon Airways, allowing close coordination of schedules and fares for about 120 weekly flights between the U.S. and Japan. Standardized frequent flier benefits will be the major change noticed by most passengers, according to a United Continental spokesman. Apr 4, 2011
UPS, Boeing No hazmat declaration for lithium batteries on crashed plane. The UPS 747 cargo plane that crashed in Dubai last September was carrying lithium batteries that had not been declared as hazardous cargo, according to a report from the Dubai government. Though the batteries weren't singled out as the cause of the fire that brought down the plane, the report is expected to focus international attention on safety issues surrounding such shipments. UPS says it is currently investigating about 40 different technologies to prevent crashes, including emergency oxygen systems and cockpit lighting that would help pilots see through heavy smoke. Apr 4, 2011
UPS, Boeing Investigators have determined that the fire which brought down a UPS Boeing 747-400 freighter near Dubai probably started in the main cargo deck just forward of the wings. The United Arab Emirates' General Civil Aviation Authority states that there were no declared shipments of hazardous material on the 747, but that package details identified "many" shipments of lithium batteries. Further investigation found that at least three consignments contained lithium ion battery packs which met hazardous materials criteria and "should have appeared on the cargo manifest", the GCAA adds. US Airways US Airways CEO sees "one big deal left" for airline consolidation. Despite a wave of consolidation, there's still room for "one big deal" in the U.S. airline industry, and US Airways plans to be a part of it, CEO Doug Parker said Wednesday. With a cleaned-up balance sheet and its second-best profit ever in 2010, US Airways is well-positioned for a merger, he said. The company boasts a 10% market share, trailing United Continental, Delta and American among legacy carriers. "I believe any of the three of them at the right time could do something with us if we wanted to and they wanted to," Parker noted. Apr 7, 2011
US Airways Press Release: US Airways Pilots Express Outrage over Data Theft Facilitated by US Airways Management. The pilots of US Airways, represented by the US Airline Pilots Association (USAPA), today expressed their outrage at the airline's acknowledgement that its management personnel aided in unauthorized distribution of the highly confidential personal data of thousands of pilots. USAPA is currently cooperating with a criminal investigation into this matter. US Airways recently admitted that a management pilot accessed and transferred a confidential database containing the personal information of thousands of US Airways pilots, including names, addresses and Social Security numbers. The transferred database may also have included pilot passport information. The data was given to a third party pilot group, which has acted to disrupt the ongoing negotiations between USAPA and US Airways currently under the auspices of the National Mediation Board and undermine USAPAOs bargaining objectives. "US Airways pilots are infuriated at the data breach perpetuated by a management official of the company for which they work," stated Mike Cleary, president of USAPA. "Thousands of us have been exposed to identity theft that could impact us for the rest of our lives. Further, as the Federal Bureau of Investigation has yet to determine the extent of the breach, we are concerned about the security of ALL information provided to US Airways [ETH] including our familiesO personal information. US Airways collects personal information on US Airways employees' family members and information from passengers, such as credit card data." USAPA has been working with the FBI since November 2010 in an attempt to determine the exact scope of the data breach. In his letter alerting the FBI, the Transportation Security Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration to USAPAOs concerns, President Cleary said, "We believe the unauthorized access to this confidential information may pose a direct threat to national security, our represented pilotsO safety, and their professional standing. "The exact scope of the breach is unknown, but unauthorized access to airline pilot passport numbers coupled with pilot residential addresses could potentially be used to forge U.S. commercial airline pilot passports, or identities, in order to gain access to international or domestic commercial aircraft or flights [ETH] thereby posing a direct threat to our nationOs security." "In light of this breach, USAPA has concluded that US Airways cannot be trusted with confidential or sensitive information," President Cleary said today. "The union is also extremely disappointed by the CompanyOs lack of aggressive action to address this issue, first denying that a significant breach had even occurred, then equivocating concerning the extent of that breach, all the while taking no remedial action against the Company personnel involved in the breach. Significantly, the Company has also failed to take steps to provide lifelong protection to the pilots directly affected and adequately address the potential national security issues for all of our pilots and passengers." USAPA is committed to spending the time and resources necessary to protect its members, while it believes that US Airways sits on the sideline. US Airways management has informed USAPA that it is relying on the OassurancesO of the very parties responsible for the data breach that the confidential information will not be misused. "This is, of course, ludicrous," President Cleary responded. "ItOs analogous to a bank robber promising he will not spend the stolen loot. We are demanding swift and aggressive action as we simultaneously take significant steps to hold both US Airways and the specific responsible parties liable for the damage caused." Headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., the US Airline Pilots Association (USAPA) represents the more than 5,000 mainline pilots who fly for US Airways. USAPA's mission is to ensure safe flights for airline passengers by guaranteeing that their lives are in the hands of only the most qualified, competent and well-equipped pilots. USAPA will fight against any practices that may jeopardize its pilots' training, equipment, workplace environment, compensation or work/life balance, or that compromise its pilots' ability to execute the optimal flight. Visit the USAPA website at www.USAirlinePilots.org. Apr 6, 2011
US Airways US Airways Ranked First among OBig FiveO Carriers in On-Time Arrivals and Baggage Handling for February and Annual Airline Quality Report. US Airways ranked first among the OBig FiveO hub and spoke airlines in the United States in February in two of three operational categories tracked by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) [ETH] on-time arrivals and baggage handling [ETH] in its Air Travel Consumer Report, released today. US Airways placed third in the third category, customer satisfaction, as measured by fewest complaints filed with the DOT. Additionally, US Airways was ranked first among the nationOs big hub-and-spoke carriers, and 6th overall, in the annual Airline Quality Report (AQR) released yesterday. The AQR is published by teams of researchers at Wichita State University in Kansas and Purdue University in Indiana. US Airways improved its ranking among the OBig FiveO for the fifth consecutive year, and its 6th place overall ranking was up from 8th place a year ago. US AirwaysO top rankings in the DOTOs February report earned the airlineOs employees payouts for their contributions to that outstanding performance. February is the 11th consecutive month in which the carrierOs employees have earned such payouts. US AirwaysO OTriple Play BucksO program awards workers $50 every time the company places first in any of the three DOT monthly operational performance categories. Because US Airways placed first in two categories in February, employees will receive $100 in Triple Play payouts. Apr 5, 2011
US Airways, Aircell US Airways has not made a decision on whether to install Aircell's Gogo onboard Wi-Fi across its domestic fleet. At present, only the carrier's Airbus A321s are equipped and usage is very low, according to President Scott Kirby, who told reporters at the US Airways media day Wednesday that it averages "below 5%" while "breakeven is north of 20%." However, he also expects that onboard connectivity eventually will become prevalent among US carriers for competitive reasons. US also said it plans to install a first-class cabin onboard 110 US regional jets this year, comprising 52 CRJ-700/900 aircraft and 58 Embraer 170/175s. Cost of the program was put at $35 million by Executive VP and CFO Derek Kerr. It will be completed by January 2012. Apr 8, 2011
